WSU Spay Program Partnership

Our partnership with the WSU College of Veterinary Medicine Junior Surgery Program allows many of the female dogs in our rescue to be spayed free of charge. This program is also geared toward low income pet owners via our rescue, helping remove financial barriers to essential veterinary care while preventing unwanted litters.

Dogs who participate receive more than surgery alone, including vaccinations, a microchip, a full physical exam, blood work, and additional supportive care. At the same time, Junior Surgery students gain hands-on experience under the direct guidance of licensed veterinarians and instructors.

How the program works
During the school year, dogs travel to the WSU campus on Monday and return on Friday. Our dedicated volunteers handle transportation to and from Lewiston. Staying on campus for the week allows students to participate in the dog’s care from intake through discharge, providing a complete learning experience.

Eligibility requirements for female dogs

  • At least 6 months old

  • Female dogs only

  • Not reactive to people or other dogs

  • Not a brachycephalic breed such as Pugs, French Bulldogs, English Bulldogs, Boston Terriers, or Boxers

  • No known medical issues that could complicate anesthesia

  • No recent exposure to contagious illnesses like kennel cough or parvo

Health certificate exam
Before acceptance into the program, a health certificate exam is required. This is a quick 15 to 20 minute appointment with a WSU veterinarian here in Lewiston. During the visit, vitals are checked, blood work is done, vaccines are updated as needed, and weight is recorded to confirm the dog is healthy enough for surgery. We also use this time to get to know the dog and ensure they are a good behavioral fit for the program.

Once your spay program paperwork is submitted, you will receive a scheduled day, time, and location for your dog’s health certificate exam.

This program has been an incredible resource for our rescue and a meaningful learning opportunity for future veterinarians, and we are grateful for the continued partnership.
