22 Dogs Rescued from Uninhabitable Conditions In Nez Perce County

Lapwai, ID – On July 17, 2025, Nez Perce Tribal Police, in coordination with the Idaho Animal Rescue Network (IARN), executed a search warrant at a residence on Grouse Road just outside of Lapwai, Idaho. The warrant followed growing concerns about the welfare of numerous small dogs housed in a mobile home on the property.

Concerns first emerged following a recent grass fire that led to an evacuation in the area. During evacuations, authorities noted a troubling situation involving a large number of chihuahua and chihuahua-mix dogs living in poor conditions. The mobile home lacked running water and was receiving electricity through an extension cord from another home on the property. Rescuers and officers expressed concern not only for the animals’ well-being, but also for the safety and health of the residents living in the mobile home.

During a follow-up visit last week, the property owners agreed to voluntarily surrender a some of the dogs. However, additional dogs could be heard inside the home, and rescuers noted a strong odor emanating from the residence, prompting further investigation.

With these concerns in mind, a warrant was obtained and served to allow entry into the home. What rescuers found was a deeply concerning scene: 22 small-breed dogs of all ages confined in uninhabitable conditions, many of them in need of veterinary care. The environment posed serious health and safety hazards to both animals and humans.

“This is another heartbreaking reminder of how quickly situations can spiral out of control, especially with unaltered animals in rural areas,” said Jenna Redheart, director of Idaho Animal Rescue Network. “We’re thankful for the cooperation of the Nez Perce Tribal Police, our rescue partners, and volunteers who assisted with getting these dogs to safety.”

At the request of Idaho Animal Rescue Network (IARN), several local rescue organizations stepped in to assist with the removal of the dogs from the property. Helping Hands Rescue, Animal Rescue Foundation, and Lewis Clark Animal Shelter all participated and provided on-site support during the operation. Their combined efforts helped ensure that each dog was safely removed and transported to appropriate care.

“This was a big undertaking, and we couldn’t have done it alone,” Redheart said. “We’re incredibly thankful for the fast and compassionate response from our partner organizations. When we come together like this, it’s the animals who win. Collaboration is what makes large-scale rescue efforts like this possible.”

IARN is now working with local veterinary partners to assess the dogs’ medical needs and needs support from the public.
